What is BSI?

BSI is Basic Skills Instruction.  It is comprised of a small group setting with explicit, assessment driven instruction in the areas where your child needs support.  I currently provide instruction in Reading, Writing and Math at the second and fifth grade level.  Your child's homeroom teacher and I have continuous communication so that the instruction given to your child is seemless and productive.

Programs used for BSI are as follows:

Reading

LLI (Leveled Literacy Intervention) by Fountas and Pinnell

Project Read by Victoroia E. Greene and Mary Lee Enfield, Ph.D.

     Wilson Reading Program

Math

Go Math!  by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt

     Touch Math

What happens in my child's BSI Reading lesson?

The students are given small group instruction away from the distractions that occur in a large class setting.  Usually there are three students/teacher.  There are several components to each lesson.  What follows is a short description of each curriculum component:

Interactive Read-Aloud and Literature Discussion

Students engage in discussion with one another and the teacher aboout a text that they have heard read aloud ore one they have read independently to build a deeper meaning.

Shared and Performance Reading

Students read together or take roles in reading a shared text.  They reflect the meaning of the text in their voices.

Writing about Reading

Students extend their understanding of a text through using a variety of writing genres and illustrations.

Writing

Students composeand write for a variety of purposes and audiences in a variety of genres.

Oral, Visual, and Technological Communication

Students present their ideas through oral discussion and presentation or through the use of technology.

Phonics, Spelling, and Word Study

Students learn about the relationships of letters to sounds as well as the structure of words to help them in reading and spelling.

Guided Reading

Students read a teacher-selected  text in small group; the teacher provides explicit teaching and support for reading increasingly challenging texts with accuracy, understanding, and fluency.

What happens during my child's BSI Math time?

Math support is given at times before a lesson, during the lesson or sometimes after a lesson. This is because assessment is ongoing and drives my instruction. The input of the homeroom teacher is critical in this area.  Usually I am present during your child's Math lesson in their whole group setting.  I can refocus your child if their attention drifts,  point to or highlight important information in their texts, listen to the lesson to determine the core curriculum standards and assess the need for support in that area.

If it is determined that more practice is needed in a particular skill area I am there to pull your child aside within the class or plan on pulling your child to a small group setting to further explain the area of study and then return them when they are ready.
